New Resources

The Parent-Adolescent Communication about Sex in Latino Families: A Guide for Practitioners has been released by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy.

With the goal of creating school environments that promote mental health and reduces problems, Mental Health in School & School Improvement: Current Status, Concerns, and New Directions has been released by the Center for Mental Health in Schools.

CDC Reports on Flu So Far This Season
In a summary of U.S. seasonal influenza from the beginning of the 2007-08 season last September to February of this year, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says the country as a whole experienced a relatively low incidence of flu this time around, though one of the strains infecting people is not included in the current vaccine.

CDC Warns About ‘Choking Game’
In a report to be published in tomorrow’s Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), the National Center for Injury Prevention and Control in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is cautioning parents, educators, and health care professionals about a practice known as the ‘choking game,’ which has resulted in death or disability for many youngsters.

Over half of Latinas become pregnant before the age of 20. The birth rate for teenage Latinas has increased in 16 out of 37 states surveyed by the National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy. The Parent-Adolescent Communication about Sex in Latino Families: A Guide for Practitioners includes tips for parents on how to talk to their children about sex and tips for how practitioners can talk to families and foster effective communication.

In an effort to engage a wide range of stakeholders in the conversation around mental health in schools, the Center for Mental Health in Schools has made its publication Mental Health in School & School Improvement: Current Status, Concerns, and New Directions available to download for free on its website. Topics include evidence-based practice, mental health promotion and policy changes.
