New Resources

Highlighting the socio-economic disparities seen in emergency care, the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality released the statistical brief, Pediatric Emergency Department Visits in Community Hospitals from Selected States.

Two years after its proposed development, the Department of Health and Human Service’s Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee Report, 2008
is now available.

New from the Center


Olga Acosta Price of CHHCS and Michelle Lyn, director of Duke University’s program to provide mental health services for children of immigrants and refugees, spoke at the National School-Based Health Care Convention (NASBHC) on providing more effective care for this population.

Donna Behrens and Julia Lear of CHHCS joined NASBHC’s executive director, John Schlitt, in laying out relevant issues for school-based health centers in the upcoming health care reform debate.

Theresa Chapman of CHHCS exhibited at the 40th Annual Conference of the National Association of School Nurses.

News Alert

Moratoria on CMS Regulations Cutting Medicaid Payments to Schools Included In Legislation Signed by President (6/30/2008)
On June 30, President Bush signed the supplemental war funding bill passed by both houses of Congress that included a suspension of the CMS regulations that would have reduced or eliminated Medicaid reimbursement to schools for administrative and transportation services and payments for case management.

New Resources

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality’s statistical brief, Pediatric Emergency Department Visits in Community Hospitals from Selected States, compares rates of emergency room visits by children from low-income communities with those of children from high-income communities. Rates of ED visits were inversely related to wealth: the rate of ED visits in the poorest communities was 86.1 percent higher than the rate in the wealthiest communities (413.8 visits per 1,000 children in the poorest communities compared to 222.3 visits per 1,000 children in the wealthiest communities).

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Service’s Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee Report, 2008  presents and summarizes the Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee’s review of science relating physical activity to a variety of health outcomes. It also addresses the benefits of physical activity for particular subgroups of the population such as children and youth, pregnant and postpartum women, persons with disabilities, and individuals with some chronic conditions.
