Preventing Lead Poisoning in Refugee and Immigrant Communities,
produced by the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance, Bureau of Refugee and Immigrant Assistance, is a 19 minute video on lead poisoning prevention, identification, and testing.
Revisiting and Updating the Multicultural Principles for Head Start Programs Serving Children Ages Birth to Five published by the Offices of Head Start, seeks to maximize the effectiveness of Head Start programs by ensuring that staff understand and offer appropriate services to the diverse children and families they serve.
Ten Ways to Promote Educational Achievement Beyond the Classroom,
published by Child Trends, identifies ten goals involving non-school factors that can have a substantial effect on educational outcomes.
New from the Center
The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools has posted a new report titled Comparative Case Study of Caring Across Communities: Identifying Essential Components of Comprehensive School-Linked Mental Health Services for Refugee and Immigrant Children. The report is an evaluation of the three-year Caring Across Communities grant program managed by the Center. The report explored several aspects of the program, including the challenges experienced by the children and families the CAC programs served; the necessary components of comprehensive mental health services for refugee and immigrant children; and how partnerships between schools and multiple community agencies can work collaboratively to implement the necessary components of comprehensive mental health services. Caring Across Communities (CAC), a program of the Center for Health and Health Care in Schools, is featured in a new video from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. The 15 participating CAC grantees developed community partnerships that supported school-based mental health programming for students, parents, and teachers.
Supporting Immigrant & Refugee Communities (SIRC) Listserv is now active! The listserv provides an opportunity to pose questions to the field, share information, and network with colleagues nationwide. General Mills has partnered with the National Dairy Council’s Fuel Up to Play 60 Program to expand school breakfast programs. Schools already enrolled in the Fuel Up to Play 60 Program and wishing to expand their school breakfast can submit proposals. Proposals should demonstrate how the school breakfast program will be expanded or improved in sustainable ways.
US Department of Education – Safe and Supportive Schools (Deadline: 8/9/10)
The purpose of the Safe and Supportive Schools grant program is to improve learning conditions to create safer schools and reduce substance abuse. Proposals should demonstrate state wide measurement and targeted programmatic interventions to accomplish this goal. The Obama Administration announced the list of free preventive health services, including prevention services to children, under the new health care reform law.
