Covering Immigrant Children: Where do we stand? Center for Children and Families Health Policy Institute. Georgetown University, Washington, DC. Caring Across Communities Conference. April 2009.
This presentation by Joan Alker, Co-Executive Director of the Center for Children and Families Health Policy Institute, reviews current and anticipated efforts to provide coverage through the federal Medicaid and CHIP programs for children, with a focus on immigrant children. Ms. Alker summarizes changes in coverage under last spring's Children's Health Insurance Reauthorization Act (CHIPRA), the Immigrant Children's Health Improvement Act (ICHIA), and various state responses to these two pieces of legislation. She also discusses how CHIPRA and ICHIA could affect health care coverage for legal immigrant children in the future.

Recommendations to Revise School Meal Standards Released by IOM
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) released their recommendations today for new nutrition standards to make school meals more healthful in the report, School Meals: Building Blocks for Healthy Children.

Tips for Setting Up a Vaccination Clinic, released by The US Department of Education and the The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, provides helpful tips to educators and administrators on how to set up and provide vaccination clinics at schools. The brochure gives information to schools on how to partner with local public health agencies, obtain parental consent, ensure that the vaccination site is logistically prepared and help ensure that school leaders, students and family members are educated about H1N1.

The report identifies the major health issues of the NHPI population; the barriers that hamper knowledge and recognition of these major health issues; the strategies that lead to the elimination of health disparities in the NHPI population, and three challenges that hampered the knowledge and recognition of these issues.

The researchers found that parental support may provide key protection for adolescents from bullying and that cyber bullying is much different than traditional bullying.
