The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) at the Department of Health and Human Services has released a 150-page toolkit for community- and faith-based service providers that offers a step-by-step guide to planning and implementing a sustainability strategy for grassroots, community based programs.
As reported in a recent news release from the Guttmacher Institute on family planning clinics and preventing teen pregnancy, publicly funded family planning clinics prevent 1.4 million unintended pregnancies each year.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) has created a toolkit for community- and faith-based service providers on sustaining grassroots, community-based programs so that clients of the programs do not have to suffer disruptions in the services they receive. The document covers organizational assessment and readiness, effective marketing strategies, financial management, sustainability strategies (fund development and fund raising), and results-oriented evaluations.
According to a recent news release from the Guttmacher Institute, publicly funded family planning clinics provide contraceptive services to approximately seven million women, many of whom are teens, each year. Without these services, the annual number of unintended pregnancies and abortions in the United States would be almost 50% higher. In other words, 1.4 million unintended pregnancies and 600,000 abortions are averted each year because of these services.
