Early School Readiness, a recent report from Child Trends, examines the prevalence of ‘school readiness’ and the implications is has for different student populations. Compared with white or black children, Hispanic children are less likely to be able to recognize the letters of the alphabet, count to 20 or higher, or write their names before they start kindergarten. Black children are similar to white children on these measures, but are more likely than white children to be reading words in books.
A new framework for childhood obesity research, from the Michael and Susan Dell Center for Healthy Living, characterizes and organizes their model of research on childhood obesity. Guided by existing public health models, this framework provides a visual organization of the factors that influence child health.
